Rare & local breeder in Northern Scotland of 200 pairs.
Scarce around the UK & Irish coasts in Winter of 500 birds & rare inland.
Commoner around the coasts in the Winter.
Known as Arctic Loons in North America.
Adults have a black back with chequered white spots in Summer plumage.
Stripes down the side of the neck & grey head.
The call is a loud and rhythmic "oooéé-cu-cloooéé-cu-cloooéé-cu-cluuéé whistling song A "áááh-oo" could also be heard.
Juveniles are similar to non breeding Adults, except for the scale line on the back.
Both Juvenile & Adult have a white patch to the rear of the body.
