Curlew Sandpiper

Calidris ferruginea

Scarce, but widespread migrants in Britain with about 740 per year between August-October.

 Breeds in the high Arctic.

Also winters in Western Europe.

Breeding Adults are brick red around the face, throat & chest.

Winter birds have greyish upperparts and white underparts with some pale grey streaks; however, as feather wear increases, it slowly becomes browner.

In flight, they have a prominent white wingstripe and rump.

Juveniles are buffy orangy brown, but still have a Curlew shaped bill.

Some Juveniles have greyer plumage.
