Locally numerous Winter Visitors of 91,000 in NE,SE & Southern Britain from October-March, sometimes in May.
Breeds in the high arctic and winters in Southern & Eastern England.
Some also winter in North West France, the Netherlands & the Southern North Sea.
Rare inland.
Adults are mainly black & brownish with a small white neck patch either side.
Juveniles are similar to Adult, but have white tertials.
In flight, they have a distint gutteral call.
