Rare breeders in the Northern Britain & Scotland of 300 pairs & scarce migrants between April-June, also September-October.
Also in Northern Europe.
Most are seen on passage between April-September.
In North America, it is replaced by the Hudsonian Whimbrel.
Adults are mainly greyish brown, with a white back and rump and a long curved beak with a kink rather than a smooth curve.
The usual call is a rippling whistle, prolonged into a trill for the song.
