Locally common Winter visitors from September-March of 470,000 birds in Britain.

Winters in Iberia, North Africa, local in North America & the Mediterranean coast. 

Rare breeder of 400 pairs in Scotland.

Also breeds in Iceland.

The breeding Males have grey flanks and back, with a black rear end, a dark green speculum and a brilliant white patch on upper & underwings, visible in flight or at rest.

It has a pink breast, white belly, and a chestnut head with a creamy crown.

Eclipse Males look more like the Females, but darker.

The Female is light brown.

The call is a distinctive whistle that can be likened to the sound of "pjiew pjiew", while the female has a low growling sound that can be transcribed as "rawr".
