Dama dama
Common & widespread in Ireland, England, Wales & Scotland.
Few others are kept in Deer parks.
The Male Fallow Deer is known as a buck, the Female is a Doe, and the young a Fawn.
Much variation occurs in the coat colour of the species, with four main variants: common, menil, melanistic, and leucistic – not to be confused with the inherited genetic condition, albinism.
Leucistic coats are the lightest in colour, almost white.
Some can even be confused with the Sika Deer.
Male European Fallow Deer produce low-frequency vocalizations called groans; the sound of these groans results from the consistent and complex shape of the vocal tract involving the oral and nasal cavities.
