Rare residents of 440 pairs in Scotland [including the Isle of Mull] & reintroduced to Ireland.

Also breed in Spain, Alps, Italy, some Mediterranean Islands, North East Europe & North America.

Adults both sexes have similar plumage and are primarily dark brown, with some grey on the inner wing and tail, and a paler, typically golden colour on the back of the crown and nape that gives the species its common name.

Juveniles are similar to adults but tend to be darker, with a bit of white in the wings.

They fly & soar broad, long wings with somewhat finger-like indentations on the tips of the wing.
