Great Black-backed Gull

Larus marinus

Locally common resident breeders with 190,000 pairs in Britain plus 2,000 in Ireland.

Much commoner in Winter.

Also breeds on inland lakes and sea coasts in North & Central Europe & North Eastern America.

Winters in South to Southern Europe & the Eastern USA.

Adults have a greyish-black on the wings and back, with conspicuous, contrasting white "mirrors" at the wing tips.

The legs are pinkish, and the bill is yellow or yellow-pink with some orange or red near tip of lower bill. 

Juveniles takes 4 years to reach Adult plumage.

The call is a deep "laughing" cry, kaa-ga-ga.
