Year round breeding residents in Britain on both inland lakes, reservoirs & on the coast.
Also occurs in most parts of Europe & North Eastern America.
Adults are mainly black, with white cheeks & yellow patch at the base of the bill.
The white thigh patch is only visible in the breeding season.
The flight is a bit Goose like.
Juveniles are brownish birds & no crest like the Shag.
The call is a rather is mixed of grunts.
