Widespread & localized common breeding residents of 4,000 pairs in Britain & 19,000 in the Winter.
Also occurs in Europe.
Adults in breeding plumage have head and neck decorations.
The call is a loud barking rah-rah-rah.
They can also produce a clicking kek call, and deep growls.
In winter, this is whiter than most grebes, with white above the eye, and a pink bill.
Juveniles have altogether a stripy head.
The flight of all Grebes are rather weak.
