Scarce Winter Visitor of 3,000 birds August-May.
A few have Summered partially in Scotland & the Northern Isles.
Rare on lakes & reservoirs.
They breed in Iceland, Greenland, Svalbard, Alaska, North America, Norway & Northern Scotland.
Common Winter visitor to Britain.
Known as Common Loons in North America.
Adults in Summer are black with white spots.
Non breedng birds are brownish with a dark neck and head marked with dark grey-brown.
Juveniles often has a dark, brownish-grey nape that may look darker than the pale-edged black feathers. It has a dark grey to black head, neck, and upperparts, with white throat, cheeks, and underparts.
In flight its head is slightly lower than its body, with its feet trailing behind.
