Common & widespread residents with 2 million pairs in Britain plus 1.3 million birds in Ireland.

Also breeds in mainland Europe, Asia & North West Africa.

Adult have white cheeks, green back, black crown, yellow belly with black stripe, blue legs & blue tail.

Males black stripe on the belly is more boldy marked & on Females is brocken.

Juveniles are duller than Adults.

One of the most familiar is a "teacher, teacher", often likened to a squeaky wheelbarrow wheel, which is used in proclaiming ownership of a territory.
