Increasingly scarce & local residents in the UK with 170,000 breeding pairs in some parts of the country & declining.
Rare in Ireland.
Also breeds in Spain, France & Southern Norway eastwards to North & Central Asia.
Introduced to Southern Canada & the Northern USA.
Formerly known as Common Partridge.
The sexes are similar.
Males have a brighter orangy face.
The belly is white, usually marked with a large chestnut-brown horse-shoe mark in Males, and also in many Females.
The call is a harsh, high-pitched kieerr-ik.
