Locally common resident with 50,000 breeding pairs in Britain & Ireland on fast following streams and rivers & decline after severe Winters.

Also breeds in mainland Europe & North Africa. 

Winters in South Africa.

Some birds winter in Britain.

Breeding Males have a black throat that is edged by whitish moustachial stripes.

Non-breeding Males, Females & Juveniles lack the black throat & whitish moustachial stripes.

They have a clear sharp call note and the song consists of trills.
