Scarce & local Winter visitors of 700 birds in Britain.
Has bred in Scotland.
Breeds in Arctic Russia, Finland, Norway, Sweden & Northern North America.
Also winters in Denmark, the Baltics, Hungary, Ukraine, The Netherlands, Central Asia & the Southern USA.
In America they are known as Lapland Longspurs.
Summer Males have a black head and throat, white eyestripe, chestnut nape, white underparts, and a heavily streaked black-grey back.
Other plumages have a plainer orange-brown head, a browner back and chestnut nape and wing panels.
The most common flight call is a hard "prrrrt" usually preceded by a more nasal "teeww".
