Scarce Winter visitors to Britain from Continental Europe between November- March.

Rare breeding bird in some parts of Britain.

Commoner in Ireland.

Mainly nocturnal.

Adults have long ear tufts, which are actually feathers, orange ey rings & bold black streaks down the brest.

Juveniles are greyer than Adults & have yellow eye ring.

The call is a series of deep hooting.
