Common & widespread residents of 100,000 pairs in Britain & Ireland.

650,000 birds winter between October-March.

Also widespread in the rest of  Europe & North America.

Males have green heads, grey body & purplish belly.

Females have mainly brown-speckled plumage.

Both sexes have an area of white-bordered black or iridescent purple or blue feathers called a speculum on their wings; Males especially tend to have blue speculum feathers. 

The fimilar call is the Female's quack which is a sequence of 2–10 quacks in a row, starting loud and with the volume gradually decreasing.

Male mallards make a sound phonetically similar to that of the female, a typical quack, but it is deeper and quieter compared to that of the female.
