Scarce breeder of 1,000 pairs & fairly common Winter Visitor of 18,000 birds [mostly in August-April season]

Males has an iridescent, dark green head, though less intensely iridescent than a drake mallard's head, and appears black at distance or in poor light, white breast, and chestnut belly and flanks, and a black or very dark grey bill.

The pale blue forewing shows well on flying birds.

The Female is a dull, mottled brown like other dabbling ducks,[with a plumage similar to that of a female mallard, but easily distinguished by the long,broad bill.

Eclispe Males are Female like, except for the pale blue forewing.

Female's forewing is grey.

Males have a clunking call, whereas the Females has a mallard-like quack.
