Ortolan Bunting

Emberiza hortulana

Rare vagrants to Britain & Ireland from South Eastern Europe, mainly from May-September into October.

 In appearance and habits it much resembles its relative the Yellowhammer, but lacks the bright colouring of that species; the ortolan's head, for instance, is greenish-grey, instead of a bright yellow.

The song resembles that of the Yellowhammer.

Males are brighter than Females.

Juveniles are duller than the Adults.
