Red-backed Shrike

Lanis collurio

Scarce migrants, mostly coastal in Autumn & regular Summer Visitor in Britain.

Irregular breeder with 5 pairs between April-September.

 Breeds in open cultivated country from May-September in South West & North East Europe.

Winters in South Africa.

Males have reddish upper parts & have a grey head and a typical shrike black stripe through the eye.

Underparts are tinged pink, and the tail has a black and white pattern similar to that of a Wheatear. 

Females & Juveniles have brown upper parts and vermiculated. Underparts are buff and also vermiculated.
