Rare & declining Autumn/Winter Visitor mostly NE/E with 50 per year mostly in the September-March period.

Rare in the Summer.

Breeds on lakes in Central & Eastern Europe & North America, & winters south to Southern Europe, Southern China & Central USA.

Adults in Summer plumage have a red neck hence the name, black crown & white cheeks.

In Winter, Adults are mainly grey & brownish with a dull yellow bill.

Juveniles have a stripy head pattern.
