Rare vagrants from Europe with 40-60 per year from Apr-May & Aug-October in Britain.

Has bred in the past.

Summer Migrants to Southern Europe & Alaska.

Winters in Western & North Africa. 

Adult Males have a brown back with blue throat & a red spot.

Females & Juveniles of all subspecies usually have just a blackish crescent and very limited blue on an otherwise cream throat and breast, though older individuals can develop more strongly male-like plumage.

The Male has a varied and very imitative song. Its call is a typical chat chack noise.
