Calidris alba

Locally common migrant & Winter visitors of 18,000 birds from July-May in Britain.

Breeds in the high arctic of North America, Greenland & Northern Siberia.

Also in mainland Europe to South Africa & South America.

They are also seen on passage.

Breeding Adults have red face & throat.

Winter birds are very pale, almost white apart from a dark shoulder patch. 

Juveniles are spangled black and white, and shows much more contrast than the Adults.
