Fairly common residents of 19,000 breeding pairs in Britain & an extremely rare vagrant in Ireland with 1 record.

Also breeds in mainland Europe, mainly nocturnal.

Adults have  rounded head lacks ear tufts, and the facial disc surrounding the dark brown eyes is usually rather plain.

The nominate race has two morphs which differ in their plumage colour, one form having rufous brown upperparts and the other greyish brown, although intermediates also occur.

The underparts of both morphs are whitish and streaked with brown.

Juveniles are dull greyish, brown in colouring.

The Males has a well known hooting song, followed by the Females Kewick call.

Which gives the whole song as being twitchtwoo.
