Local species in Wales and western England, with a darker subspecies (scotica) locally in parts of northern England and Scotland, sometimes occurring as a melanic form.
The overwintering larvae feed mainly on gorse (Ulex) and broom (Cytisus).
Adults are on wing from May to June in one generation per year.
Mainly nocturnal.
