Breeds in South Western Europe, Southern Central Europe & North Africa from April-August.

Winters in Africa.

Males are striking birds with black and white upper parts, a chestnut crown and pure white underparts. 

Females & Juveniles have brown and white upperparts and vermiculated.

Underparts are buff and also vermiculated.
