Apple or Orchard Ermine

Yponomeuta malinellus or padella

Both very common & widespread in Britain.

Both species are very difficult to identify in the field.

Both Larvae species feeds on different foodplants.

The Apple Ermine Larvae feeds on Apple, living gregariously within a silken web.

The Larvae of Orchard or Spindle Ermine feeds on Spindle in a silken web.

Both species fly in a single generation during July & August.

The Moths are attracted to light.
